Americans are driving less than they were nine years ago. Federal Highway Administration data shows drivers will log an average of about ten-percent fewer miles this year than they did in 2005.

It's unclear whether that decline is related to the fact that 2005 is when gas prices started climbing from about two-dollars-per-gallon to more than four dollars-per-gallon three years later.

There are more drivers on the road now than in 2005, so the total number of miles driven is roughly this same. (Metro Networks Inc.)
