Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Once Called Boston Home
If New York wasn't enough to radicalize potential 2028 presidential hopeful Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, it might have been Boston's influence that did.
"AOC" was born in 1989 in the Parkchester section of The Bronx in New York City. After graduating from Yorktown High School in 2007, the future New York Congresswoman moved to Boston, where she attended Boston University and graduated cum laude in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in International Relations and Economics.
Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat, is also affiliated with the Working Families and Democratic Socialists of America.
Where AOC Lived While Attending Boston University
During her time in Boston, AOC lived on the 16th floor (16-B) in the Warren Towers dormitory at 700 Commonwealth Avenue, in the Kenmore/Fenway area. She was active in student life while attending BU.
Time magazine named AOC to its 2019 list of the world's most influential people when she was 29.
AOC’s Early Activism at Boston University
BU's Bostonia says, "Her activism dates back to her days at BU, where she was a leading student ambassador for the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground."
U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren praised AOC in an essay for Time magazine. "She reminds all of us that even while greed and corruption slow our progress, even while armies of lobbyists swarm Washington, in our Democracy, true power still rests with the people," Warren wrote.
AOC’s Internship With Senator Edward Kennedy
While attending BU, AOC served as an intern from 2008 to 2009 for Massachusetts U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy in the foreign affairs and immigration office, often focusing on constituent casework.
CBS Boston says AOC was known as "Sandy" during her time at Boston University.
