Officials with AirAsia are now confirming that debris found in the Java Sea today is that of a missing airliner.

In a statement, the airline said it had confirmed through Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency that the debris was from Flight 8501.

The airline statement did not mention the recovery of any bodies from the search area.

Earlier in the day, search crews said they had pulled at least 40 bodies from the water along with some wreckage from the doomed AirAsia flight.

The flight from Indonesia to Singapore vanished over the weekend with 162 people on board.

AirAsia's CEO Tony Fernandez tweeted that he's rushing to the Indonesian city of Surabaya to be with families of the victims, saying his heart is filled with sadness.
