An experimental vaccine for Type 1 diabetes is showing promise in early testing. The vaccine aims to shut down immune cells that attack the pancreas and kill cells that secrete insulin, while leaving the rest of the immune system alone. Researchers at Stanford in the U.S. and Leiden University in the Netherlands hope the vaccine will provide a way to delay or reverse the disease that affects as many as three million Americans.
