New Bedford firefighters rescued two young women Thursday afternoon from a fire escape at the old SMTI building on Purchase Street, after a section of the fire escape collapsed.

Fire Chief Michael Gomes tells WBSM News, the women were on the roof of the building, and when one of them jumped to a lower deck, the structure gave way....

Gomes says the injured woman fell about 20 feet and suffered two fractures and other injuries.

She's being treated at Rhode Island Hospital. No word on whether any criminal charges will be filed.
