There's a program at New Bedford High School that provides needy students and their families with the basic necessities of life.

Since opening "Whalers Attic" in May of this year, more than 30 students have been helped with clothing, food and other supplies.

Headmaster Bernadette Coelho tells WBSM News, Whaler's Attic is a low key program, and that's done for a reason. "We want our students to feel safe to know its okay if they need a little bit of extra help, so we try to maintain that level of anonymity for our students. But they know that if they need help, the Whaler's Attic is here to serve them."

With winter approaching, the Whaler's Attic is in desperate need of large-sized winter coats for both men and women, as well as socks, gloves and hats and undergarments.

The program also collects non-perishable food items, soaps, toothpaste and other hygiene products.

Coelho says Whalers Attic is accepting donations year-round. "Those that need food on the table, that need clothes on their back, they need that year round," said Coelho. "And so, Whaler's Attic supports our students year-round, including during the summer months, when we have summer programs running."
