The Wareham Police Department is stepping up patrols throughout the holiday season.

The "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" enforcement program begins Wednesday in the town, and extra cruisers will be on the road, specifically looking for the telltale swerves and other signs of drunk drivers.

Wareham Police Lt. Kevin Walsh tells WBSM News the program is designed to curb drunk driving, but also to make others aware there's an increased amount of drunk drivers on the road.

Walsh says the police department receives a grant for participating in the program, which allows the department to bring on extra patrol cars for the duration of the program.

The extra patrols in Wareham will run through January 1.
