PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says a tugboat and barge that sank in waters of Point Judith is still underwater, but that crews are going to try to recover the barge and salvage the tug.

The 50-foot tug towing an empty barge overturned in stormy waters around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Petty Officer Robert Simpson says the seas are calmer Thursday than they were Wednesday night.

Coast Guard officials said they believed the tug had sunk and warned all marine traffic that the empty barge was adrift about a mile and a half east of Point Judith.

The National Weather Service had a gale warning in effect for the area.
