A 17-year-old from Taunton accused of shooting another teen will be tried as a Youthful Offender.

Gregg Miliote, a spokesman with the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, says that Edson Montrond was indicted by a Bristol County Grand Jury in connection with a September 29 non-fatal shooting of another teen in Taunton's Hopewell Park.

Montrond, who was 16 at the time of shooting, is facing charges of armed assault with intent to murder, armed assault with intent to rob, assault and battery with a firearm, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon-causing serious bodily injury and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The Youthful offender status means that he will be treated as an adult in the criminal justice system and the case will be held in what is commonly known as “an adult sitting of the juvenile court,” meaning the court is open to the public and the defendant faces adult criminal punishments if convicted.

Montrond will be arraigned November 20 in Taunton Juvenile court.
