Nationwide, there are between two and three million kids and adults inflicting self-harm and pain on themselves to cope with emotions. It's called cutting, self-inflicted cutting of skin and it continues to rise, according to psychologists and doctors who see most cases during the school year.

Self-harming is a problem that is often hard to talk about. A majority of cutters do so on parts of their body that can easily be hidden. For some, cutting is a way to end emotional pain. For others, it's simply a way to feel something at all. When pain is felt, it's part of the gratification derived from it. Cutters will say they don't feel anything emotionally, so they cause themselves harm to know they are alive.

Doctors do have some strategies for kids that feel like they can't stop self-harming. One of them is to keep a rubber band on their wrist at all times and when they feel like they want to cut themselves, they just snap the rubber band and that physical pain will help with their emotional pain.

Cutting behavior is most common among girls and young women. Cutting is not an attempt at suicide but rather a way to cope with emotional problems. Celebrities are not immune to cutting. Demi Lovato has struggled with cutting. Megan Fox, Courtney Love and Amy Winehouse battled with cutting. And, it's so sad to note that Princess Diana had her difficulties with cutting. Princess Diana revealed that she was a cutter, saying, "You have so much pain inside yourself that you try and hurt yourself on the outside because you want help," the Toronto Sun once reported.
