More than 40 percent of the bridges in Massachusetts are "functionally obsolete." That's according to a new report from the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, saying it's the highest percentage in the nation. And there's not much money available to fix them.

The federal government could be cutting back on the flow of money for highway and bridge projects by this summer.

Transportation officials say the Highway Trust Fund which is supposed to pay for bridge and road construction is depleted because the federal gas tax hasn't increased since the 1990s.

They say the cost to fix thousands of substandard bridges in Massachusetts right now adds up to more than 12-billion dollars.
