The Patrick Administration is making another major investment in New Bedford, this time at the State Pier.

Rep. Wililam Straus of Mattapoisett, co-chair of the Committee on Transportation, says the state is putting up $1 million to install refrigeration in one of the State Pier warehouses.

State officials say the refrigeration will likely serve to double the number of ships bringing fruits and vegetables to New Bedford and result in about 60 new jobs.

Currently, the Port of New Bedford receives produce from overseas bound for Canada, but with the addition of the refrigerated space, its hoped New Bedford will become a gateway for American Grocers here in the Northeast.
