New Bedford Police detectives this week arrested a suspect in a violent stabbing on Washington Street in the West End.

According to a press release, the attack happened on May 14 when a male stopped his car in traffic, walked over to a man on a sidewalk, and apparently stabbed him.

When police responded they found the victim bleeding from his abdomen. He was transported to the hospital. Information on his condition was not available.

The suspect's vehicle was located a short time later at Hall and Rivet streets.

Twenty-two-year-old Taurus Lamar Veal Jr. of New Bedford was taken into custody and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Chief Joseph Cordiero praised the officers involved for their exceptional teamwork and making a quick arrest.
