The Massachusetts State Police have announced that a "Sobriety Checkpoint" will be in effect this weekend on a public way in Bristol County.

The checkpoint begins Friday and will run through Saturday.

State Police Superintendent Colonel Timothy Alben says the hours of operation will vary, safety will be assured, the selection of vehicles will not be arbitrary and any inconveniences to motorists will be minimized with advanced notice in order to reduce fear and anxiety.

Alben says the purpose of the checkpoint is to increase public awareness of the need to detect and remove from our roadways drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

The program is funded through a grant provided by the Highway Safety Division of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.
