A veteran New Bedford police officer is the top choice of Mattapoisett Selectman to be the town's new harbormaster. Sgt. Jill Simmons, who is a 40 year veteran of the New Bedford Police Dept, plans to retire from the force in August and by law she is allowed to work 960 hours during retirement without endangering her pension. After interviewing Simmons Tuesday night, Selectman unanimously voted to have Town Administrator Michael Gagne pursue an agreement with Simmons.

Simmons told the board that she turned down a harbor master position in New Bedford because it would be full time. Mattapoisettt officals said she would spend about 960 hours on the job in town. Current Harbormaster Horace Field predicted after Simmon's interview, she was the front runner for the job.
