This debate gains traction, and then loses gas. Some state lawmakers want to grant illegal immigrants Massachusetts driver licenses because they say it's a matter of public safety.

Celia J. Blue, head of the Registry of Motor Vehicles, says the Commonwealth will generate about $15 million plus $7.5 million in renewal fees every five years. Blue told a legislative committee that the legislation was about public safety ensuring illegals have passed road tests and purchased insurance.

But opponents say granting undocumented workers a driver's license would be tantamount to rewarding people who violated our laws. Legislation pending would waive the requirement that illegals present a Social Security number in order to obtain their license.
