A drug-resistant intestinal illness is spreading across the U.S.

The Centers for Disease Control said today that 243 cases have turned up between May and February, with the biggest clusters in California, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.

The Shigella bacteria has proven resistant to the antibiotic most commonly prescribed to treat it.  It's a sign of a growing problem with drug-resistant "superbugs" in the U.S., which cause 23-thousand deaths every year.

Last week, President Obama signed a one-point-two billion dollar national action plan to fight the diseases. (Metro Networks Inc.)
