The New Bedford City Council Committee on Environmental Affairs is taking what one Councilor calls "historic steps" to protect Sassaquinn Pond in the far north end.  The first step says Ward One Councilor Jim Oliveira, to declare the pond an area of critical environmental concern.

The designation involves the creation of an ordinance that through zoning, would mandate steps to protect the pond, and lessen harmful run-off from homes that surround the waterway.  Oliveira says the goal is to "bring back" Sassaquin Pond to what it was years ago, an area for swimming and recreation.  The committee is also planning a visiting trip to the pond at a future date with the area's legislative delegation, to make a case for funding to carry out some of those improvements.
