Pope Benedict, the leader of the Catholic church, broke the news to the Vatican saying that due to his advanced age, he can no longer be the leader that they need him to be. Pope Benedict is 85-years-old, and has been the head of the Catholic church since 2005.

Pope Benedict's statement to the Vatican went as such:

Strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.

Pope Bendict served as the 256th Pope, and the third longest papacy in history. He did a lot in his time as Pope, including expanding the church in Africa, and Latin America.
