New Bedford Police are beefing up patrols and looking into improving the lighting around the Hetland Memorial skating rink, after a rash of car breaks.

Police say there have been five breaks over the last three weekends with wallets, credit cards, a pocketbook and a cellphone stolen.Detective Captain Steve Vicente says that in all of the breaks the doors to the vehicles were locked and entry was gained by smashing the windows but the items that were stolen had been left in plain sight.

Vicente urges people to lock their vehicles and remove their valuables from view.
