In an effort to fill the void created by the injury of Danny Amendola in last week's win over the LA Rams, the Patriots had three different free agent wide receivers in for workouts Thursday.

According to ESPN Patriots Insider Mike Reiss, after the work outs the Pats select former Indianapolis Colt Griff Whalen as the man to fill Amendola's spot, until the wide out gets back to full health.

Whalen has caught 47 passes for 509 yards in his four year career and, while it is unclear how much of an impact he will have in the offense, he does have experience returning punts. In Amendola's absence, that area of the game is a big need for the Pats, as they don't want to over exert Julian Edelman on special teams and rookie Cyrus Jones has had trouble holding onto the football this season.

Whalen now gives the Pats four true receivers o  the roster, though they do have undrafted rookie D.J. Foster on the 53-man squad. In college Foster, who has been working with the receivers so far this week, spent a couple of season as a receiver.

Whalen, who played his college ball at Stanford, spent time this season with both the Miami Dolphins and San Diego Chargers.
