Opinion | Phil Paleologos: Do You Favor the 28th Amendment?

There are currently 27 ratified amendments to our U.S. Constitution, of which the first ten are known as the Bill of Rights. About 8 years ago there was a bit of internet based politicking about proposing a constitutional amendment that would seek to require that laws apply equally to U.S. citizens and members of Congress. There were internet rumors circulating that this “28th Amendment” had the backing of Warren Buffett, but that was not true.

If a 28th Amendment were to be proposed, it would read something like: “Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the Citizens of the United States…” maybe a little shorter, but you get the gist of it.

I would definitely vote in favor of this and to take it a step further, local candidates running for state or federal office should agree to sign on to this.

For an amendment to become official, it must pass a majority of two-thirds from both the House and the Senate.

I’m in favor of this but what about you?
