The sun was shining down on New Bedford's newest solar park Friday afternoon.

Local, state, and federal officials gathered at the Sullivan's Ledge "Superfund" site for a commissioning ceremony to welcome a major step in the city's Renewable Energy Initiative.

EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy says this solar park brings hope to combating similar cleanup projects.

Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection David Cash says the city sets an example for the nation.

The Sullivan's Ledge "Superfund" site was once one of the most contaminated properties in the nation after a long history of being a chemical dumping ground.

The site has now been fitted with over 5,000 solar panels across the 10 acre property on Hathaway Road.

It will produce renewable energy straight into the city's power supply and save tax payers millions over the course of the next 20 years.
