New Bedford Police are investigating after an early Sunday morning crash involving a taxi cab and a police cruiser.

Detective Captain Steven Vicente says around 2:30 a.m. the cruiser collided with the cab that had crossed through the intersection of Hathaway road and Appletree lane, with the cruiser hitting the rear quarter of the cab.

The officer sustained a wrist injury when the airbags deployed and he was taken to Saint Luke's hospital where he was treated and released.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Vicente says the cab driver was cited for operating a vehicle without headlights and failure to yield at an intersection.

The cab driver also claimed the brakes on his vehicle were not working.
