New York State Makes Novelty Lighters Illegal
Before the New York State Assembly called it quits for the summer they managed to pass one more law banning novelty lighters in the state.
While Massachusetts has long been known as the 'Nanny State', New York State is quickly taking that nickname from us. Along with a large soda ban, and not being allowed to smoke in your own apartment, owning a 'novelty lighter' is now illegal in the state.
New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver gave this statement:
These lighters may appear harmless because they look like toys, but in reality they are flame-producing devices that children like to play with. This is a combination that spells disaster, and it must be eliminated. Our bill would prohibit the sale of these lethal items. They are a public safety hazard and a threat to the lives of children.
We are glad to see that our neighboring state is tackling the tough issues.
