Seven candidates tossed their hats into the ring for New Bedford's School Committee vacancy, but only one emerged victorious Monday. That man was Housing Authority Chairman Bruce Oliveira, who took 12 of a possible 17 votes from a joint session of the City Council and School Board. Oliveira tells WBSM News, each candidate brought a unique skill set to the table, and he's grateful for the opportunity he's been given.

Maria Mojica, also of the Housing Authority, took second with four votes, and former School Board member Nancy Feeney captured a single vote. Oliveira takes fills the seat left vacant by Tom Clark's resignation in September.
