A new piece of research equipment at UMass Dartmouth is the first of its kind in Southeastern Massachusetts.

A duel source single crystal x-ray diffractometer was unveiled Monday at the campus Research building. The equipment can produce a three dimensional picture of the properties that make up an object or compound.

University spokesman John Hoey tells WBSM News, the device will be shared with six other colleges and universities in the region.

UMass Dartmouth acquired the diffractometer using a $330,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.
