A radar gun is being developed by a company called ComSonics that would be able to pick up radio frequencies showing that drivers are texting.

Reporting on the new invention, the Virginian-Pilot cited ComSonics as saying the radar gun isn't far from production. The technology can distinguish between texting and calling, which would be useful since some states bar texting, but not calling. CNET says the technology raises questions, though, such as will the radar gun be able to pick up the content of the texts, and will it be able to tell if it's the driver texting illegally or just a passenger in the car.

According to Drivers.com, the top three leading causes of accidents on American roads are (1) distracted driving, (2) speeding and (3) drunk driving (DUI/DWI).

Today, 44 of 50 states have laws on the books that ban drivers from using devices (laptops, smartphones, tablets and watches) to send text messages.
