A nation mourns, and a small community in Southwestern Connecticut is shattered by a shooting spree that left 20 young children dead.  It happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.  The total death toll is 27.

That includes six adults and the shooter in the incident. New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell had the same reaction most of us did, when he heard about the shooting.

Mitchell says as a precaution next week, he'll order school resource officers to double their rounds at the High School and Middle Schools.  The mayor says he'll also ask for more patrols around the city's elementary schools.  He'll also remind school administrators to make sure the automatic locks are activated, so that no one can enter New Bedford schools without making contact with the office first.
