NEW BEDFORD - A New Bedford man is arrested this week in connection to a shooting earlier this month.

Police announced Thursday the Tuesday arrest of Bruno Miguel Lopes, 22, of 92 Griffin Court, New Bedford.

Authorities say Lopes was walking on Middle Street on May 15 when he shot at a vehicle that was driving past him. Nobody was injured during the shooting.

Through an investigation, New Bedford Police detectives and gang unit members located Lopes in a home in the 80-block of Crapo Street. At the time of his arrest, police found in Lopes' possession a .38 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun, six .38 caliber ammunition cartridges, ten Suboxone strips, and two Oxycodone tablets.

Lopes is charged with possession of a firearm without a license, improper storage of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and two counts of possession of a Class B substance.

Lopes also faces a warrant arrest charge, which carries separate charges including discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm, destruction of property over $250, and assault and battery by discharge of a firearm.

Lopes is being held pending a dangerousness hearing.

Police say Lopes has nine open cases in New Bedford District Court and failed to show up for court dates at least 14 times. He has 12 adult arraignments on charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, and possession of a narcotic with intent to distribute.
