A New Bedford man is under arrest after breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and taking their child. According to Detective Captain Steve Vicente, 37-year-old Richard Cruz broke into his ex-girlfriend’s house on Libra Drive armed with a baseball bat. Police say Cruz threatened the woman, and left with the 2 month old baby on foot.
Police soon spotted Cruz in a nearby Dunkin’ Donuts holding the baby and the baseball bat. He was taken into custody without incident and the child was returned safely to the mother. Cruz is being arraigned today on charges of breaking and entering in the daytime, assault with a dangerous weapon, and custodial kidnapping of a minor by relative.
Update 8:00 P.M.
A hearing has been set for Cruz for Wednesday, Sept. 5. He is currently being held without bail.
