New Bedford High School is joining the Parker Street Elementary School as a level 4 school. It means the school is underperforming and under state law, the school must create a 3 year turnaround plan. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Pia Durkin, in a written statement, says that she along with the Mayor and School Committee are committed to improve New Bedford High School and as a level 4 school, the high school will be eligible to apply significant federal dollars to help design a great high school and return New Bedford High to its former glory. Dr. Durkin adds she'll be working with the Education Commissioner and his staff along with local stakeholders in devising the high school's turnaround plan.
