New Bedford Police Stop Potential Deadly Shooting Monday Night

New Bedford Police and the Gang unit may have prevented a shooting Monday night in the South Central Neighborhood.

They were called to the Wing Street, Acushnet Avenue area to a report of a possible fight. Officers learned that a black Nissan Maxima was circling the area with a firearm in the trunk.

They stopped the car and searched the trunk where they found a loaded 22 caliber semi automatic weapon which was not registered to the driver who didn't have a license to carry firearms.

Police arrested 18 year old Sidney Alves Maia of Grinnell Street in New Bedford. He's facing charges of unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm.
