Massachusetts State Police are investigating after a fatal crash on Route 140 in New Bedford on July 4 claimed the lives of two Virginia residents.

According to state police, troopers from the Dartmouth barracks responded at about 7:45 p.m. for a report of a single-vehicle crash on Route 140 northbound in the area of the 6.2-mile marker in New Bedford.

They say a 2010 Mercury Milan was traveling northbound in the left lane when, for reasons still unknown, it went off the road into the guardrail, then into the median and struck a tree. The 38-year-old male driver and the 35-year-old female passenger, both from Newport News, Virginia, were pronounced dead at scene.

State police say speed is believed to be a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
