A boat fire early Thursday morning sent black smoke into the air. District Fire Chief James Fortin tells WBSM News the fishing boat "Janice & Julie" was docked at Co Op Wharf and when firefighters arrived on the scene, they found flames on the deck and traced them to the kitchen area. No one was on board at time of the fire.

It took New Bedford Firefighters about a half an hour to put out the fire which was confined to the kitchen. Chief Fortin does not believe the fire is suspicious but an investigation is underway and the pier was not involved with the fire.
