Most companies that make dietary supplements have violated Food and Drug Administration rules.

The man who heads the FDA's Dietary Supplement Programs says 70% of the nations supplement companies have broken agency rules over the past five years. Dr. Daniel Fabricant says problems include poorly measured ingredients, dirty manufacturing equipment, pesticides in herbal products and supplements contaminated with illegal prescription medications.

An estimated 150-million Americans use such supplements as multivitamins, herbal remedies, protein powders, weight-loss aids, and mineral tablets.
