Mitchell To DESE: New Bedford Opposed To “City On The Hill” Charter School

Mayor Jon Mitchell has informed the Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education, he is opposed to the City On The Hill Charter School in Boston, being awarded a charter for a new school in New Bedford.  In a ten page letter to Commissioner Mitchell Chester, the Mayor said his opposition is related to cost, and the school’s poor educational record…..

Mitchell says the city would have to provide the charter school with $15 million over the next eight years to operate in New Bedford.  He said that money is much needed in the exsisting public schools.  Mitchell’s letter earned praise from Lou St. John, the President of the New Bedford Educators Association, who criticized City On The Hill for its low graduation rates.  St. John said if City on The Hill is considered a success, then that kind of success isn’t needed in New Bedford
