The Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highway Division District 5 has announced that it will temporarily close a section of Route 88 Southbound in Westport overnight on Thursday, May 4, at 8 p.m., to perform bridge maintenance to the bridge carrying Route 88 Southbound over I-195 Eastbound and Westbound.  The Route 88 Southbound roadway is scheduled to reopen to traffic on Friday, May 5, at 5 a.m.

A temporary detour will be in place for all motor vehicle traffic as follows:

For traffic traveling from I-195 Westbound to Route 88:

  • Take I-195 WB to Exit 8A to Route 24 SB
  • Take Route 24 SB to Exit 2 to Brayton Avenue.
  • Turn right and head east on Brayton Avenue and take ramp to Route 24 NB.
  • Take Route 24 NB to Exit 3 to I-195 EB.
  • Take I-195 EB to Exit 10 to Route 88 SB.

In addition to the detour, the breakdown and right travel lane on I-195 Eastbound under the Route 88 Southbound Overpass will also be closed to traffic for the duration of the work.  Two travel lanes will remain open to traffic on I-195 Eastbound during this period.

Drivers who are traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution.

All scheduled work is weather dependent and/or may be impacted should any sort of emergency situation occur.
