Part-time workers at the Market Basket supermarket chain have been told they will no longer be on the schedule, as of Sunday.

Store shelves have been empty and customers staying away due to a protest from workers.

The company released a statement saying store directors are responsible for determining appropriate staffing levels, and the company did not want to lay anyone off.

The Massachusetts Attorney General has set up a hotline for Market Basket employees.

The workers want Arthur T. Demoulas back in charge, or for his buy-out offer to be accepted.
