Man Jumps Off New Bedford/Fairhaven Bridge, Hitches Ride with Barge

A chase for a suspect in Fairhaven results in a man jumping off of the New Bedford/Fairhaven Bridge.

New Bedford Police confirm a chase for the individual began in Fairhaven and came to a stop on the bridge when the man got out of his car and leaped into the water.

Police say the man tried to evade capture by holding onto a moving barge in the harbor, but the operator of the vessel brought the man to shore where he was taken into custody by Fairhaven Police.

The man's identity and the reason why he was being chased by police is not yet known.
