Officials in Fall River say a 63-year-old man has died after fire engulfed his apartment despite efforts by neighbors to help him.

The Herald-News reports fire officials say Jesse Silvia Jr. was found dead in his living room on Monday.

Fire Capt. Neil Furtado said neighbors heard smoke alarms and heard the man screaming, but were unable to help him because of heavy smoke and fire. Furtado said one neighbor kicked open the door but only made it three feet into the apartment.

Furtado said firefighters found his body.

Furtado said Silvia was alone when the fire broke out, apparently in his kitchen. His three pet birds also died.

Other apartments in the complex were evacuated but the fire didn't spread and no one else was injured.
