Five local high school students on their way to college received the Jacobs Family Scholarship to pursue studies in science and engineering. The recipients were recognized during a presentation downtown Monday afternoon.

New Bedford High School senior Halle Berger plans to attend Northeastern University in the fall to study marine biology. She says this scholarship gives her the opportunity to pursue her dreams and also give back to the community...

Additional recipients include Keith Miner, Jonathan Morgan, Miranda Prevost, and Austin Taylor.

The Jacobs Family Scholarship is presented by the Community Foundation of Southern Massachusetts.

The funds for the award come from New Bedford native Dr. Irwin Jacobs and his wife Joan Klein Jacobs.

It was first awarded to two students in the amount of $20,000 in 2001 and has now grown to five students in the amount of $35,000.
