Gov. Deval Patrick has signed into law a bill that requires automakers to provide independent repair shops and vehicles owners in Mass. with software needed to diagnose car trouble.  Automakers have until 2018 to provide the onboard diagnostic and repair information. Sam Giammalvo of Giammalvo's Auto Sales in New Bedford applauds the bill.  He says it will level the playing field for independent repair shops and dealers.

The bill represents a compromise between supporters and opponents who looked to avoid an expensive ballot question campaign over the so-called ``Right to Repair,'' proposal.
