BROCKTON (WBSM) — A Lakeville woman pleaded guilty to her role in a scheme to steal and cash a winning lottery ticket for $3 million.

Carly Nunes, 24, pleaded guilty in Brockton Superior Court to one count each of Presentation of a False Claim. She has been sentenced to two years of probation with drug screens and drug counseling.

On January 17, 2023, the male victim entered the store formerly known as Savas Liquors, located at 330 Bedford Street in Lakeville. He purchased two Massachusetts State Lottery Quick Picks for the Mega Millions lottery and two for the Mass Cash lottery.

At the time, Nunes, the counter clerk, rang up the man's order for the tickets and other purchases.

According to documents, the tickets were left behind, which Nunes took into her possession.

On January 19, 2023, Joseph Reddem, 32, of Randolph, drove Nunes to the Massachusetts State Lottery Headquarters in Dorchester to redeem the lottery prize of three million dollars.

During an altercation between the two, Reddem allegedly made extortion demands for the jackpot, which was caught on surveillance. As a result, the Massachusetts Lottery opened an investigation behind the tickets with the Massachusetts State Police.

Surveillance video from Sava confirmed that the male victim had purchased the tickets. After nearly a month, on February 13, 2023, investigators located and interviewed the man.

The charge followed a four-month investigation by Massachusetts State Police, the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission, and Lakeville Police. The investigation involved a review of records, video surveillance footage and witness interviews.

Nunes was arraigned on the charges back in June 2023 and held on $10,000 cash bail.

Redeem is also charged with allegedly attempting to extort Nunes into paying him money. He is scheduled to go to trial on the charge in May.
