With his Senate confirmation as Secretary of State, the race will now begin in Massachusetts to succeed Senator John Kerry.  In the meantime, Governor Deval Patrick will appoint an interim Senator on Wednesday to fill the seat until a special election is held.

A primary is scheduled for April 30th and a special election will be held on June 25th.  Congressman Ed Markey has announced his candidacy and fellow Democratic Congressman Stephen Lynch is expected to announce his intentions this week.  On the Republican side, there is continued speculation about former Senator Scott Brown, the winner of a special election in 2010, who was defeated in November by Elizabeth Warren.
