The Bristol County District Attorney's Office has identified the victim of a shooting early Sunday morning at Acushent Avenue and Blackmer St. as 24 year old Jeffrey Syliva Jr. of New Bedford.

A homicide investigation is underway in New Bedford, after a male body was discovered at the intersection of Acushnet Avenue and Blackmer St. early Sunday.

Police responded to the intersection at 1:37am after the city's Shot Spotter system notified authorities of several shots fired in that area.  They found the victim, a 24 year old New Bedford man, lying in the street.  He was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim's name has not been released and the investigation is continuing.

A short time later, Police arrested a suspect in connection with the case.  He's identified as 22 year old Michael Souza of 49 Acushnet Avenue.  A spokesman for the District Attorney's office says Souza is being charged with obstruction of justice for allegedly misleading and obstructing investigators while being questioned around 7am Sunday at the New Bedford Police Station.
