A report of shots fired in New Bedford's South End leads to an arrest.

Police responded to Ashley Street around 10pm Sunday night after witnesses reported gunshots in the area. When police arrived, they saw a man with a gun in his hand. The officers drew their weapons and ordered the suspect to drop his. The suspect threw the gun over a fence, and was immediately arrested.

The suspect, identified as 24-year-old William Mendez-Rodriguez of Ashley Street, was in possession of a large amount of marijuana and nearly $5,000 in cash. Police recovered a .40 caliber handgun nearby.

Mendez-Rodriguez faces multiple drugs and firearms charges in connection with the incident.
