WESPORT — A four-hour standoff in Westport Thursday night ended peacefully, after a 28-year-old man had threatened to harm himself with a kitchen knife.

Westport Police responded to an address on Boysenberry Drive at the request of Fall River Police at around 5:15 p.m. Thursday. Fall River Police were looking to arrest 28-year-old William Deston in regards to a criminal investigation in their city.

Deston had been staying at the Westport home with relatives, and Westport Police responding to the residence spotted him through a window, according to police spokesman Detective Jeff Majewski.

The homeowner arrived and went inside to ask Deston to exit the house for the police. The homeowner then came outside and told police that Deston had a knife and was not coming out. The homeowner was not threatened during the encounter.

The Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (SEMLEC) Swat Team was called to assist Westport Police, while crisis negotiators also responded.

After approximately four hours, Deston exited the house and was taken into custody. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, and was scheduled to be arraigned today in Fall River District Court for violating a restraining order.
