Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is urging Harvard graduates to listen to, and act on, the ``unrest'' in their hearts as they head into the world.

Patrick, an alumnus of Harvard and Harvard Law School, said during his commencement speech Thursday that the world is depending on the graduates for big ideas to tackle problems such as social inequity and climate change.

He said it will take hard work to turn those ideas into action.

Patrick also tried to instill a bit of modesty into the graduates.

He referred to himself as a ``poor, black kid from Chicago'' and passed on a note of caution he received from his grandmother, telling the graduates that ``what you don't know could fill a book.''

Patrick ended eight years as governor in January.  (Associated Press)
