New Bedford Fire Chief Michael Gomes is hoping to have fire alarm service restored to businesses in the far North End by sometime Saturday.

About 100 fire boxes north of Tarkiln Hill Road lost power on Wednesday when a construction crew, working in the vicinity of railroad tracks in the Wamsutta area, accidentally cut a master cable.

Those fire boxes automatically notify the Fire Department of any emergency, but right now they're not working. Business owners will have to call 9-1-1.

Chief Gomes says he hopes to have the problem repaired by Saturday, but he adds, there's no guarantee.
